The CollectorVision Phoenix

This design is based on a couple of constraints. The first was practical: Due to mold costs and the limited run nature of the console, the design had to remain simple with only a few actual pieces. With consultation with the OEM, we settled on a two piece case, but there was enough room in the budget to also mold some dust doors and the buttons. Once this was decided, we started laying the aesthetic direction out. While it was tempting to do a radical design, we felt that toning down the angularity of the Colecovision would be a mistake. The rectangle look is part of its identity, and adding curves to it may have made it look a little too similar to the original Model 1 Genesis. So that was kept, but the original Coleco wasn't really a cohesive design. The faux grills on the front and back were self-contained, almost like cartouches. So instead we continued them around the front and back edges to make it distinct from more angles. We also extended the traces around the sides down to the gap. We felt that instead of hiding the assembly gaps (which were garaunteed considering the molds were milled overseas), we could incorporate them into the design and make them work for us. The power and reset buttons are separated by traces to recall the original Coleco's controller bins. This was a suggestion by Collectorvision, and I think we incorporated it into the design rather well. We think this is one of the more distinctive retroconsoles out there.
